Eric Geil Testimonial
“One of the most important things to realize as you prepare to be examined/received is that each presbytery has its own distinct flavor. My own, Mid-America, could be classified as the “uber-reformed” presbytery and my own examination process appropriately reflected this. Before I scare you with my own story however, please hear me loud and clear: they want you to succeed!
During my first examination, I quickly realized what an incredibly poor job the seminary I graduated from did in teaching reformed theology. I muddled through the examination and then shared information (on the final question, no less!) that required another examination. Namely, that my wife and I had dedicated our children the month before instead of administering paedobaptism. In Mid-America this is deal-breaker.
Once I got over my pride I then embarked on two months of study and preparation for another try at the next presbytery meeting. All I can say is that this was a fantastic time of learning about our reformed faith. Members of the presbytery’s ministerial committee were incredibly helpful, sending me books and study materials as well as meeting with me personally to prepare. The next time around I was able to answer the questions in both committee and on the floor with calm assurance, not to mention timely helps provided by committee members (and yes, we did have our children baptized).
Quick things to remember: 1) everything must be backed up with Scripture, quoted line and verse, 2) Know your basics of reformed theology - the solas, the ordo salutis, and of course, T.U.L.I.P., etc… 3) Read Westminster and don’t be afraid to call out sections with which you have a problem, 4) realize they are pulling for you; there is no agenda other then to insure that teaching elders have a clue as to what we are preaching and teaching!”
